Photoshelter is no more

Just yesterday, I received a disheartening e-mail.  As I mentioned here, I was recently accepted to a second stock photography agency.  While it was a relative new venture (as far as stock agencies go), it had great potential and a wonderful community of photographers.  Sadly, Photoshelter is gone.  It’s really too bad.

I think the best summation of the whole event is on Vincent Laforet’s blog (yes, the same guy who blogged for Newsweek during the Olympics this year).

Frankly, I’m a bit disheartened by this whole turn of events not because of the closure so much, but how it was handled.  These agencies work because thousands of photographers take the time to upload, organize and keyword photos.  This is not a quick process folks.  It takes a great deal of time and research sometimes to get the photos labeled correctly.  Especially locations and nature.  If they have the wrong keywords, they won’t sell.  Not to mention the time it takes to go out and physically visit locations to shoot.  That’s a lot of man hours invested in creating an image library for them to advertise and sell to agencies, magazines, newspapers.  And sure, Photoshelter took it’s cut of the profit (30% — relatively small compared to most agencies), they did minimal work compared to the photographers.

So a year into this venture, they have thousands, possibly millions of photos.  There are thousands of photos waiting for quality control to review them and many more thousands being actively keyworded.  Instead of giving the photographers a heads up, a warning, any indication that they weren’t in it for the long haul, they simply send out an e-mail that they are closing shop.  And it’s not like they are going to keep the existing photos up and continue to market them for a while in an attempt to make some money for the photographers (and themselves I must add).  They’re removing everything on October 10th.  One month.

Not to mention that in order to add insult to injury, this New York based company decided to make this announcement on September 11th.  Now that’s just really poor taste.

So ya.  Thankfully I had just joined and hadn’t spent more than 20 or so hours working on photos for them. The show must go on.  I’ll be submitting to Alamy with a renewed focus and keeping my eye out for other venues!

Queen Anne’s Lace

In looking through some of the photos I’ve taken in the past few months, I found this nice photo of a Queen Anne’s Lace flower.  It’s nothing spectacular, but for some reason, the angle makes it visually interesting to me.

The best part of the whole thing was that I took it when I was out for an evening walk with my wife.  Sometimes, the simple and easy things produce the best photos!

And while I really like the photo, I decided to look up Queen Anne’s Lace on the interent and I found that the domestic carrot is actually a cultivar of this plant!  Perhaps I should explain.  Every time I get out the string trimmer and try to cut down the plants near the fence line on my property, I slice through a bunch of these.  And I always thought they smelled familiar but could never place it.  Now I realize that it’s carrot I smell.

So anyway, hope you all enjoy the photo and please excuse my ramblings on wild carrots!

WordPress Upgraded to 2.6.2

Well.  That was fun.

As much as I try to let my blog live peacefully in it’s own little world, I really felt that the latest WordPress update was worthwhile.  Some of the security patches affected my site so I decided to go for it.

Thankfully, the WordPress site gave good directions here.

So… if there are any odd issues with the site, please drop me a comment and let me know!

The Evolution of an Image

I’m not sure why, but I was feeling somewhat moody with regards to image processing today. This is an image which wasn’t really that spectacular when I took it. I was literally standing on my front lawn when I snapped it. Today, I found the urge to edit it.

Of course, the power lines had to go.  It also had to be straightened.  The shot was taken just before a storm.  The wind was starting to pick up and there were some very threatening clouds approaching.  So I decided to try to re-create the mood that existed at that moment.  Granted, I didn’t really capture it in the original, but thanks to the digital era, I was able to take some creative license.  The next few steps really just sort of happened and with a little selective burning and dodging, I ended up with a moody shot which I believe captures the feeling that day.  Click on the image to see a larger version as I don’t think the small version does it justice.

Let me know what you think.  I submitted it to a couple stock agencies so we’ll see if they think it’s sellable.  All comments are welcome!

Accepted at Photoshelter!

I’ve been accepted by Photoshelter!

While I just got accepted into Alamy less than a month ago, I really want to ensure that I’m marketing to the largest group of agencies possible.  However, I really didn’t want to follow the Royalty Free image marketing scheme.  Therefore, I decided that perhaps Photoshelter may be another great opportunity to sell the style of images I enjoy taking.

Photoshelter is a bit different than Alamy.  They operate more like a traditional stock agency where you submit photographs and they determine if they need them for their collection.  While the images must be good quality (sharp, proper colors and proper composition), they aren’t as rigorous with their upload policy as Alamy.  They also allow the photographer to set their own prices.

[Widget Removed with the demise of Photoshelter]

The above widget should update to show my latest images which have been uploaded.  I’m sure that at some point, I’ll incorporate it into the design on this blog, but for now, it gives an idea of exactly what I have available!
